World Wars Spring topic 2022

World Wars

Year 5 looked at a range of propaganda posters from the war time.  They analysed these in terms of their effectiveness before designing their own.

Children considered ways in which people adapted to living during War time:

Year 5 and 6 were visited by the Northern Holocaust Education Group and had a talk from a lady whose Grandfather had travelled to England on the Kindertransport.

Year 5 converted units of measure and weighed out a week's worth of rations.  They discussed how families may have coped with this and how they would have supplemented their rations during wartime.

Children were given a challenge at home to create their own air raid shelter.   It needed to be big enough for a lego man, would withstand weight and be waterproof to protect the lego inhabitants.

The children enjoyed cracking codes from through the ages including Caesar cipher and binary code.
