School Meals

Here at Pinfold our school lunches are provided by Chartwells. We have menus for different weeks so your child always has something to choose from on a three weekly basis.

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal under the Government’s ‘Universal Infant Free School Meals’ scheme.

When your child moves up to KS2 (Years 3 - 6) they will no longer be eligible for Universal Free school Meals.  This means that if you are not already in receipt of benefit related free school meals and would like your child to have a school lunch, the cost will be £14.75 per week (£2.95 per day) and is payable on Arbor.

However, families who receive certain benefits may be eligible for benefit related free school meals.

From September 2026, the Government will introduce substantial changes to Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility. Under the new national criteria, all families in receipt of Universal Credit will qualify for free school meals, meaning that more students will become eligible.

Therefore, from September 2026, there will be two categories of benefit-related FSM.

1. Targeted Free School Meals:

This category continues to be based on the existing income threshold. Students will be eligible if their household;

  • Is in receipt of Universal Credit, and
  • Has an annual household income of £7,400 or less.

Only students eligible for Targeted FSM will:

  • Qualify for Pupil Premium funding for school, to fund valuable support like extra tuition, additional teaching staff or after school activities.
  • Be eligible for extended rights home to school transport, subject to the eligibility criteria for extended rights travel.

2. Expanded Free School Meals:

This category applies to school meals only and covers pupils who:

  • Live in households receiving Universal Credit, and
  • Do not meet the income threshold for Targeted FSM (i.e. the annual household income is above £7,400).

Pupils eligible for Expanded FSM will be eligible to free school meals only.

This will start from September 2026.

Being eligible for free school meals does not mean that your child is committed to having a school meal if they do not want one.
